Sign up for this flamenco workshop with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana and you’ll be stomping and snapping with the best of them. In town for a performance, New York City–based Flamenco Vivo is one of the most renowned Spanish dance companies in the United States. On Saturday, February 25, one of the core company dancers will offer a fast and fun 75 minute class starting at 11:15 am, prior to its evening performance as part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Winter Performing Arts Series. The flamenco dance workshop is open to all ages and levels of experience and costs $20 for Sun Valley Center members, $30 for nonmembers and $10 for kids 13-18 (minimum 13 years old for this workshop). The west may be having a warm and dry winter, but the cross-country skiing in Sun Valley is superb after welcomed snowfall during the holidays. With more than 150 kilometers groomed and in great shape in NordicTown USA, the groomers of the Blaine County Recreation District and Sun Valley Resort have been working hard to set up great tracks for classic skiing, skating, and snowshoeing from Ketchum, Idaho to Galena Lodge in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area just north of Sun Valley. Conditions on the Harriman Trail (Boulder Mountain Tour course) are incredibly good and even if there is no additional snow for the first week of February, there is plenty of high quality snow for the Sun Valley Nordic Festival to go forward without disruption. Two series of bridge lessons will begin the first week in January. “Bridge Basics” is designed for people who played years ago and want to learn modern bidding systems, as well as people who have never played bridge. Classes will be on Wednesdays, starting Jan. 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the community room of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 206 Sun Valley Road, Sun Valley. Nordic skiers, don’t get caught without wax on your skis, winter is here and it’s time to think skiing! Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD) and TOKO invite you to learn how to wax your own Nordic skis at a free clinics offered Thursday, Dec. 15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Art Room of the Community Campus in Hailey. Bring your skis (and any additional waxing equipment if you have it) for this “hands on” clinic. Join TOKO wax expert EJ Harpham to learn the basic waxing techniques. The clinic will provide an opportunity to learn basic ski base prep and hot-waxing. Remember, great ski bases equal fast skis and that’s makes skiing more fun! And even if your goal is not speed or race orientated, having well-maintained ski bases can help your skis glide more easily and extend the life of your skis. Smith Optics and Sun Valley Adaptive Sports are pleased to welcome Chris Waddell to tell his story of his historic journey to the roof of Africa in his film, One Revolution. The movie will be hosted at Sun Valley Opera House Wednesday November 16th, 2011 and starting at 6 pm. Here’s a little background. Chris Waddell was a promising young ski racer when in 1988, a skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Determined to not let it slow him down, Chris was back on the hill a year later riding a monoski and two years later was named to the US Disabled Ski Team. He is one of the most decorated male skiers in Paralympic history, winning 12 medals over 4 games and he spent 11 years on the US Team. He’s one of very few that have medaled in both the summer and winter games. In the fall of 2009, Chris became the first paraplegic to summit Mt Kilimanjaro unassisted.
